Join BAG Today!

The Black Alumni Group was established in 1988 as an official AA affiliate. BAG’s purpose is to keep alive professional, social and educational relationships developed within SIU’s Black community. A few of the programs your BAG membership supports include:

*Short-term emergency loans
*Scholarship opportunities for current SIU students
*Development and support of BAG and its activities
*Homecoming and member appreciation events
*The Student Alumni Council
*The award-winning Extern Program for current SIU students

Biennially, in odd-numbered years, BAG hosts a reunion in July. A myriad of social, educational and athletic events are scheduled during the reunion weekend along with a business meeting and the election of officers. In 2005, we had discounted registration for BAG members for the first time.

Membership in BAG is open to all alumni (graduates and past students) and friends who are members of the SIU Alumni Association. Your membership directly benefits BAG -- we receive a portion of your dues for our scholarships, events (including the reunion), mailings, etc. Won't you help us reveal to the world the excellence of SIU by becoming a member today?

Celebrating SIU's First Black Male Student 2/27/12 in Chicago

SIU Celebrating First African American Male Student
alexlane_sepia.jpg
As Black History Month approaches, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is set to celebrate a historic figure of its own.

Alexander Lane, who became the first African American male student to attend SIU Carbondale in 1876, rose from slavery in pre-Civil War Mississippi to become an educator, physician and Illinois state representative from Chicago.

To honor Lane’s legacy, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute is hosting a reception on Monday, Feb. 27, at Rush University Medical Center.  The reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a program at 6:30 p.m.  The program will feature remarks from David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, and Dr. Pamela Smoot, Lane Biographer and Clinical Assistant Professor at SIU Carbondale.  Smoot, who conducted extensive research on Lane, says there is much more to learn about Lane's legacy by attending this program.  (RSVPs are required to attend this event.  Please see information at the conclusion of this e-mail.)

Lane is also an 1895 graduate of Rush Medical College.

Additionally, to further honor Lane’s efforts as a trailblazer and change agent, the Paul Simon Institute has established the Alexander Lane Internship Program.  The paid internship will allow at least one student each spring to work with a member of the Illinois General Assembly toward a goal of carrying on Lane’s legacy of high achievement and public service.  The Paul Simon Institute has already received contributions and pledges of more than $100,000 toward the Alexander Lane Internship endowment.

“Not only is Alexander Lane an important, and overlooked, part of SIU history, but he serves as a role model for our students today,” Yepsen says.  “To come from his humble beginnings in the pre-Civil War south to then graduate college and become a medical and political leader in Illinois is an impressive story that needs to be told.  An internship in his honor will be a living legacy for him that can inspire and help our students -- and provide a service to the community and policy makers today.”

Lane lived in Tamaroa, in southern Illinois, when he enrolled in the teachers college in 1876, just two years after instruction at Southern Illinois Normal University began.  Lane was the third African American student to enroll at the University; two females enrolled earlier, although their names are unknown.

After attending Southern Illinois Normal University, Lane became the first principal of the black Carbondale primary school, later known as Attucks School.  He moved to Chicago and graduated in 1895 from Rush Medical College, and then established his medical practice, becoming a prominent physician on the city’s south side.  In 1906, Lane became the ninth African American elected to the Illinois General Assembly, and was re-elected in 1908.

Lane’s granddaughter and great-grandson reside in Chicago.

There is no cost to attend this special program celebrating the life and legacy of Alexander Lane.  However, RSVPs are being accepted, along with voluntary donations toward the endowed internship.  For more information, contact Matt Baughman at the Paul Simon Institute at (618) 453-4001 or baughman@siu.edu, or visit: www.paulsimoninstitute.org

Good Night Li’l Darlin’ Released July 2011

Accompanying lullaby sung by Chicago jazz vocalist Joan Collaso

What a wonderful way for a grandchild to spend the day with a grandparent.  Li’l Darlin’ spends the day with her grandmother, Mama John, and has delightful time learning about African American jazz legends.

Good Night Li’l Darlin’ captures the spirit of the African American jazz bebop and swing eras through the eyes of a child.  The colorful images leap off the page as they “cook, dance, and sing” their way through the day.

Although the book is targeted for children ages Preschool – Grade 6, the accompanying lullaby by Chicago vocalist, Joan Collaso, makes this a “must have” book for the entire household.
